The Cycle the City program is a youth program that provides immigrant youth aged 12-25 access to refurbished bicycles for the summer and support and encouragement to ride through group training sessions. They are loaned a refurbished bicycle, lock and are given a helmet and repair kit to keep. Throughout the summer, they will participate in weekly in-person sessions about cycling in the city and join a group ride around Markham streets and trails. Youth will then be encouraged to reflect on their capacity to enact change through an interactive transportation emissions audit.
Topics covered include:
- Introduction and where to ride in Markham
- Bike Safety and Skills
- Basic Bike Maintenance
- Environmentalism and Transportation Equity
This program run in two 4-week sessions, one in July and one in August. This program is held in-person at the Immigrant Youth Centre and participants must know how to ride a bike.
Priority is given to immigrant youth with PR cards / landing papers. Registration is open to all members of the public.
