I fully support the goal of making Markham safer and more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists, transit users, motorists, seniors, children, and residents of all abilities. As a candidate for Ward 6 Councillor, I believe our transportation network should provide residents with safe and practical choices for getting to work, school, parks, community facilities, and local businesses.
I support the continued implementation of Markham’s Active Transportation Master Plan and the City’s Vision Zero Road Safety Plan, with a particular focus on:
- Improving pedestrian and cycling safety, especially at busy intersections, school zones and locations with a history of collisions;
- Building a connected network, rather than isolated cycling facilities that do not provide useful connections between neighbourhoods and destinations;
- Expanding sidewalks, multi-use pathways and cycling facilities
- where they are appropriate and supported by sound traffic and safety assessments;
- Improving road design and traffic-calming measures where speeding and unsafe driving are concerns;
- Keeping infrastructure well maintained year-round, including sidewalks, pathways and cycling facilities; and
- Engaging residents before major changes are made, while balancing the needs of pedestrians, cyclists, transit users, drivers, seniors, people with disabilities and local businesses.
I also believe that transportation investments must be financially responsible and based on clear evidence of safety, connectivity and community benefit. Markham is a diverse and growing city, and our transportation planning should recognize that different neighbourhoods have different needs. I appreciate Markham Cycles’ work in promoting cycling and active transportation and would be pleased to participate in this initiative. I will try my best to submit the questionnaire by the October 12 deadline. Thank you again for reaching out and for your work with Markham residents.
