Cycling Infrastructure, Road Safety and Active Transportation

Markham needs a transportation network that works for everyone—drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, transit users, seniors and people with mobility challenges. As Markham continues to grow, we need to plan our roads and transportation infrastructure ahead of development rather than trying to catch up afterward.

I support the continued development of a safe and connected cycling network, particularly where cycling routes can connect neighbourhoods with schools, parks, community centres, GO stations, employment areas and other major destinations. However, cycling infrastructure must be designed with the broader transportation network in mind and should be based on actual usage, safety considerations and the needs of the surrounding community.

Road safety must be the first priority. I would support measures that improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, including better crossings, appropriate traffic-calming measures, improved lighting, clearer signage and separation from vehicles where warranted. School zones deserve particular attention, given the volume of children and vehicles during drop-off and pick-up periods.

For Ward 3, I also believe we need to address the relationship between active transportation and traffic congestion. Residents should have safe alternatives to driving, but those alternatives must be convenient and connected enough that people can realistically use them for everyday trips.

I would also advocate for better integration between cycling, walking and public transit. In particular, connections to GO stations and major transit corridors should be considered when planning future cycling infrastructure.

Most importantly, transportation planning should be data-driven and coordinated with growth. Before approving significant new development, the City should understand how additional residents, workers and vehicles will affect roads, intersections, transit, pedestrian movement and cycling routes.

My goal is a transportation system that provides residents with choices while maintaining safe, efficient movement throughout Ward 3 and Markham.
