Don Hamilton – Regional Councillor Candidate

October 7, 2026 by markhamcycles78b68aba38

1. Yes. I will continue to work with the Markham Cycling and Pedestrian  Committee.

2. Yes. Our City staff work in conjunction with CPAC to establish priorities for infrastructure, signage etc. and will follow their lead.

3. One of my accomplishments that finally was executed was the bike and walking path under Hwy 7 by Main Street Unionville. It took awhile but it got done. Staff prioritize projects and work within their budgets to get infrastructure items done. I would continue to support staff moving projects forward. We have a very good trail system in Markham. Eventually we will have lake to lake availability.

4. If there is sufficient space yes. If it involves redoing lanes to make them narrower to accommodate bike lanes then the cost may be prohibitive in the short term.

5. The new lit signage you see at many intersections eg McCowan and Carlton was as a result of my initiative. I would support as many items as possible subject to budgeting.

6. Yes. It should be a given not an option.

7. That’s a good question one I’ve asked before. The response was that staff responsible for maintaining roads do the best they can given our climate. Even in the summer season roads/ bike lanes have dirt and rocks everywhere.

8. I think things are pretty safe right now for students as long as they obey the rules. The better question is what should be done about all the escooters, uni-tire things, that ride anywhere they like with complete disregard for pedestrians, cars and their own lives?

9. Yes I would support that but remember it’s now the Mayor’s budget that comes to Council. He sets the priorities.

10. One thing you should insist on in your membership is that each and every bike has a front light and very bright flashing rear red light so that older adult drivers can spot them well in advance of overtaking them.
